It means storms are developing or will develop.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FLASH<b>\u00a0<\/b>FLOOD<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; A flood that occurs within a few hours (usually less than six) of heavy or excessive rainfall, dam or levee failure.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FLOOD<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; High flow, overflow or inundation of a normally dry area which causes or threatens damage.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FLOOD STAGE<\/strong>&#8211; The level of a river or stream at which considerable inundation of surrounding areas will occur.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FLY<b>\u00a0<\/b>IN<b>\u00a0<\/b>THE<b>\u00a0<\/b>OINTMENT<\/strong>&#8211; A favorite phrase of some forecasters. Refers to a forecast problem or a potential forecast problem. Could also be in reference to a forecasting problem that caused a &#8220;busted&#8221; forecast.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FOEHN<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; A warm dry wind on the lee side of a mountain range. The heating and drying are due to adiabatic compression as the wind descend downslope.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FOG<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Water droplets which are suspended in the air near the Earth&#8217;s surface and causing reduced visibilities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FORECAST PERIODS<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Routine forecasts issued before noon contain three forecast periods: Today (or this Afternoon), Tonight, and the Next Day. Routine forecasts issued after noon contain four forecast periods: Tonight, the Next Day, the Next Night, and the following Day.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FREEZE<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; When the temperature at or near the surface is expected to be 32 or below, during the growing season. Adjectives, such as &#8220;killing,&#8217; &#8220;severe,&#8221; or &#8220;hard,&#8221; are used when appropriate. A freeze may or may not be accompanied by the formation of frost.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FREEZING LEVEL<\/strong>\u00a0The altitude in the atmosphere where the temperature equals 32F.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FREEZING RAIN (DRIZZLE)\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Rain (drizzle) which freezes on contact to produce a coating of ice on the ground and other exposed surfaces.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FRONT<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; The transition zone between two distinct airmasses. The basic frontal types are cold fronts, warm fronts and occluded fronts.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FROPA<\/strong>&#8211; Frontal Passage<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FROST<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans. Frost develops under conditions similar to dew, except the temperatures are colder.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FUJITA<b>\u00a0<\/b>SCALE<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; System developed by Dr. Theodore Fujita to classify tornadoes based on wind damage. Scale is from F0 for weakest to F5 for strongest tornadoes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FUNNEL CLOUD\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; A rotating column of air forming a pendant from a cumulus\/cumulonimbus cloud with circulation\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0reaching the ground.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>FWC<\/strong>&#8211; Forecasted Weather Conditions<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F FA\u00a0&#8211; Forecast Area.
